Avant Gardens ed. 5

Welcome to Avant Gardens, a blog/newsletter where I explore all things strange, experimental, and exciting in the arts.

Hi all! I don’t know about you, but I have been SO busy. It’s that time of semester where I’m wrangling both teaching and markingmarkingmarking. They all warn you about the marking, but you never realise how big it truly is until it hits you - thankfully I really enjoy it, but still! So that’s why I’m a little late (and a little brief on my descriptions) on Avant Gardens this month :)

Excitingly, me and some friends have an exhibition coming up in 2 weeks! It’s at Goodspace Gallery https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/strange-and-unnatural-one-night-exhibition-tickets-1986293060012 - you can RSVP there :)

Maya Deren - Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)

An experimental film shown for one of the classes I’m teaching - absolutely stunning.

øjeRum - In The Mouth Of The Moon (2024)

Experimental sound piece by Danish artist øjeRum (who also makes beautiful collage and which I will have to feature in a future edition!). You can listen to more on their Bandcamp here.

Laura Makabresku - The Temptation

Makabresku is such a wildly talented photographer/artist - you can check out more of her work here.

Raime - Passed over Trail (2012)

Dark, brooding, rupturing. Excellent. Available on Bandcamp here.

Moï Ver - Paris (1931)

Avant-garde photomontages of Paris - it’s one of the rarest books (many original copies were destroyed by a flood). It’s been reprinted a few times but still seems pretty hard to find. Anyway if anyone would like to buy me a copy, that’d be great!

It’s funny how themes come out of no where - last month it was experimental photography, this month it happens to be black and white/de-saturated art. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed and I’ll see you next month xxx
